MAKING A HUNTRESS
Cutting and Preparing the Neck Blank
PAGE 1
Cutting

Above is a 3"
x 3" (75mm x 75mm) bit of Mahogany
from which 2 Neck
Blanks can be cut.
A Standard Neck Pattern (at
the top) has been 'laid on' and 2
Necks have been marked out.

The Neck is cut
on a Bandsaw with a 1/4"
blade.
( No power to the Bandsaw when the picture was
taken.)

The Neck is cut
slightly oversize - just outside the marked
line..... better safe than sorry !
A Bandsaw is
capable of very accurate cutting if
'set up' correctly.
( No power to the Bandsaw when the picture was
taken.)

Above are the Neck Blank, the Standard Pattern and the wood for another Neck Blank. The rest of the wood can be used for various other things. The 'waste' pieces next to the headstock area will be used for 'side wings' to make up the finished Headstock width. Very little is wasted.
Leveling
Leveling or getting a true and flat surface on the Neck and Headface can initially be done in a couple of ways..... By Hand Plane, Electric Planer or with a Disc Sander.
After that, the job can be done by Hand with a Sanding Block.

Leveling the Neckface
by Sanding with a 'Long
Block' and 80 grit paper.
This may take quite some time to get right. This point in the procedure is Critically
Important.....
The Neck MUST
be Straight and Level.
